Kingsman: The Secret Service was a breath of fresh air in more ways than one. Not only was it a refreshing take on a spy movie — a well worn genre if there every was one — but it was just an all-around damn fun movie. However, there was one way in which the film was especially refreshing, and that was in its use of Roxy.

Roxy, if you don’t remember, was one of the candidates to take on the name of Lancelot after the agent’s death at the start of the first film — one of only two female candidates. As expected, she and Eggsy had something of a rapport, and throughout the duration of the film’s runtime, I was waiting for the romantic angle to work its way into the film.

Luckily for us, it never did. Roxy was there solely as an agent, and she played a role in bringing down Valentine in the third act of that film. While she did do her job well in it, I would contest that she was woefully underused, and given the great dynamic she had with Eggsy in that first film, I looked forward to seeing them beefup her role for the impending sequel.

The first trailer for Kingsman: The Golden Circle has come out, and while we did get a shot of her in her Kingsman suit (which we never got to see in the last film), that’s about all we did see of her. I have to say, this concerns me.

First of all, let’s take a look at the Kingsman we know from the previous film: Eggsy, Roxy, Merlin, and Harry. That’s four remaining Kingsman. Now, we know that the film will see Kingsman headquarters destroyed, and the remaining group on the run. Here is my concern. We never see Roxy after that attack on HQ.

Matthew Vaughn is a great filmmaker, and in order for this attack to have real impact, you’d imagine that Eggsy and the rest would need to feel that loss. As bad as it is to have your entire base destroyed, there’s usually at least one casualty in the wake of such destruction. Given that we see the rest of the characters in other scenes in the film, is it safe to conclude that Roxy may meet her end in that initial attack on their HQ?

Of course, there is little to go on with that claim other than her complete absence in any other scene outside of that one shot. This trailer was less than two minutes long in length, and it’s very possible she’ll get her due when the film comes. However, I do worry that she will be the main casualty lost in the wake of that attack. This would be especially sad given the potential of the character. There are few female spies in movies like this, and it seems to set an annoying precedent to kill the one off that Kingsman just got.

Call me PC, but it certainly seems to be a risky direction in which to take the sequel. In today’s day and age, you run a risk when you decide to “refrigerate” the only female spy in a film. What do you think? Will we be saying sayonara to Roxy in Kingsman: The Golden Circle? If so, do you think it’s the right move? Let us know your thoughts down below!
